MotorLand Aragón was the track where the EuroCup-3 Spanish Winter Championship came to its end in a weekend of adaptation where, alongside a series rookie, the team achieved good results despite some ups and downs.
The final EuroCup-3 Spanish Winter Championship round took place on the weekend of March 29 and 30. MotorLand Aragón was the host track for this last meeting. The team took part in the race weekend with one car. 2024 French Formula 4 vice-champion Yani Stevenheydens joined the team to race in this round. The Belgian driver faced his EuroCup-3 debut, so his reduced experience on the car would be a challenge.
Friday was reserved for pre-event testing sessions. Stevenheydens could complete several productive runs, which was useful to face the weekend better prepared.
Saturday action got underway with a Qualifying session. Stevenheyden’s pace was competitive. He set excellent lap times that would’ve put him on the top half of the grid. Unfortunately, all of his laps were deleted as he exceeded the track limits more times that permitted. The Belgian had therefore to start Race 1 from the back of the grid.
On the race, Stevenheydens’ performance was impeccable. The youngster avoided trouble over the race, had very competitive pace and made multiple overtaking moves on track to finish in P17, with 9 positions gained.
In Qualifying 2, held on Sunday morning, Stevenheydens faced the same problems than he did on the first one. The driver, however, set lap times that would have put him in the Top 10, so he would have a good chance of bouncing back from 23rd position on the grid.
Race 2 was the cherry on top to the weekend. Stevenheydens made an excellent start, beginning his comeback. The Belgian driver was consistently among the three fastest drivers, with his personal best lap being less than two tenths behind the fastest lap. With this pace, Yani managed to climb up to 11th positions, gaining 12 spots on track.
We end the EuroCup-3 Spanish Winter Championship with good feeling after completing our best weekend of the winter season. The team now faces the upcoming challenges with ambition and determination, ready to keep performing at our best in every lap. The main EuroCup-3 season will begin in May 17-18 at the Red Bull Ring.
